Plastic Waste Collection Drive

To combat the growing menace of plastic pollution, a Plastic Waste Collection Drive was organized. The primary objective was to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of plastic on both human health and the environment. Students were encouraged to collect plastic waste from their homes, localities, and surroundings. The collected plastic was segregated and sent to a designated recycling facility where it underwent proper cleaning, sorting, and processing. Non-recyclable plastic was disposed of responsibly, ensuring minimal environmental impact. The drive not only reinforced the importance of recycling but also promoted collective community efforts towards waste management.

Bin the Battery Project

Recognizing the hazardous impact of improperly disposed batteries, the college launched the Bin the Battery Project. Students were urged to collect used batteries from their homes and neighbourhoods and deposit them in specially marked bins placed at the college campus. These were later handed over to certified recyclers who ensured safe and scientific disposal. Through this initiative, the students learned about the toxic elements in batteries and the importance of preventing soil and water contamination by disposing of them appropriately.

Seminar on Environmental Re-Engineering Series 13: Mission LiFE

Pillai College of Education and Research, New Panvel organized a series of national-level seminar from 9th to 16th December 2024. The seminar was a part of our Environmental Series, a visionary initiative spearheaded by our Principal, Dr. Sally Enos. Each year, we dedicate a seminar to addressing and emphasizing critical environmental issues. This year, the 13th edition of our Environmental Series aligned with the Government of India’s flagship initiative, Mission LiFE—Lifestyle for Environment. Mission LiFE (https://www.mygov.in/life/) is more than just a government program; it reflects the transformative vision of our honorable Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi. It is an India-led global mass movement to nudge individual and community action to protect and preserve the environment.

We took our inspiration from this initiative and lined all the sessions of this year’s seminar series around its core principles. Each session was thoughtfully designed to encourage sustainable practices, raise awareness about environmental challenges, and inspire collective action. By integrating the ideals of Mission LiFE, we aimed to promote a lifestyle that harmonizes with nature and fosters a culture of responsibility toward our planet.

District Eco-Sustainability Championship

The college proudly participated in the District Eco-Sustainability Championship, a platform to showcase sustainable practices and innovations. Our student-teachers represented the institution with presentations, models, and posters focusing on eco-friendly teaching aids, waste segregation methods, and green alternatives. Their creativity and environmental consciousness were well appreciated by the jury and fellow participants. The event fostered inter-institutional learning and collaboration for a greener future.

E-Waste Collection Drive

In continued collaboration with Thane Mahanagar Palika, the college organized its annual E-Waste Collection Drive. Teacher-students collected electronic waste such as old chargers, mobile phones, keyboards, and other unused electronic items from their homes, families, and neighbours. The collected e-waste was handed over to the concerned municipal authority for scientific and eco-friendly disposal. The drive also included an awareness campaign about the hazardous effects of e-waste on the environment and the need for sustainable disposal practices. Students pledged to reduce, reuse, and responsibly recycle their electronic gadgets.

World Earth Day Awareness Session

As Earth Day aims to inspire and mobilize people worldwide to take meaningful actions that contribute to the health and well-being of our planet. We celebrated world Earth day with an objective to raise environmental awareness, promote sustainable practices, motivate individuals to take personal responsibility aiming at educating future generations.

Compassion in Action: Creative Bird Feeders for Sparrows

As part of the Environmental Sustainability initiatives, the F.Y.B.Ed. students engaged in a meaningful activity to mark World Sparrow Day on 20th March. Understanding the importance of nurturing biodiversity and showing compassion towards birds, especially with the onset of summer, the students creatively designed bird feeders using old, recycled plastic bottles. This hands-on task not only promoted the value of upcycling waste materials but also instilled empathy towards sparrows and other small birds that struggle to find food and water during the hot season. The activity served as a blend of environmental awareness, artistic expression, and humane action, encouraging students to take small yet impactful steps towards sustainability.

Water Conservation Awareness Drive

To observe World Water Day, the Nature Club of MES’ Pillai College of Education and Research, New Panvel, conducted an awareness activity on 22nd March 2025 with the F.Y. B.Ed. students. The session focused on the theme of water conservation and the urgent need to protect our water resources. Through discussions, posters, and reflective sharing, students were sensitized to the global water crisis and encouraged to adopt simple water-saving habits in daily life. The activity aimed to instill a sense of responsibility and inspire future educators to become advocates for sustainable water use.

Composting Activity

Another sustained activity which we continued was the making of organic compost. The primary objective of this initiative was to educate students about the importance of composting and its numerous benefits, aligning with the institution’s commitment to sustainable practices. The activity emphasized the significance of composting as nature’s method of recycling food and other organic wastes into valuable material that enhances soil fertility and aids in plant growth. This is an ongoing activity which aims to instil an understanding of the ecological importance of composting among the students. Students were actively involved in the process and were asked to bring decomposable organic wastes such as kitchen scraps, garden residues, and other biodegradable materials on a daily basis.
